The Palace of Culture and Science is probably the best-known Warsaw’s landmark, which dominates the city’s skyline. This icon of Warsaw is at the same time an infamous symbol of the former Communist era and the Soviet domination over Poland. It was built by the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin as “a gift from the Soviet nation to the Polish nation”. The building was completed in 1955. Today, the Palace of Culture houses many public institutions such as cinemas, theatres, conference hall and museums. In 2007 it was listed as a historic building. Although many people associate the building with the past Communist era, it is also an integral part of the city’s urban landscape and an iconic symbol of modern Warsaw.
