Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz was formally inducted as the new Roman Catholic Metropolitan Bishop of Warsaw at a regular Palm Sunday mass in Warsaw Cathedral.In his inaugural address, Nycz urged Catholics not to "betray the Christian roots of Europe, the Christian concept of life from conception to natural death, the Christian understanding of marriage and family, freedom in raising children and everything which is human dignity. Nycz, 57, was recently identified in a new book, "Priests and the Security Police," as being a clergyman of outstanding fortitude who did not succumb to pressure to co-operate with communist intelligence services.
The book by former Solidarity activist priest Father Tadeusz Isakowiec-Zaleski names priests who did and did not succumb to pressure by communist secret police bent on infiltrating Poland's Roman Catholic church, the only institution which remained fully independent of the state in the entire communist bloc.
